Biography

Dan has practiced law in a wide array of civil, criminal and administrative matters in Hawaii since 1988. Prior to joining the firm, Dan was a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Hawaii where he had an outstanding record of accomplishment. Among other things, Dan was a lead attorney on the Bishop Estate civil litigation team in one of Hawaii's highest profile legal matters in the past two decades. That action led to the ouster of Bishop Estate Trustees Henry Peters, Richard "Dickie" Wong, Gerard Jervis, Lokelani Lindsey, and Oswald Stender and ultimately led to the reorganization of Kamehameha Schools - Bishop Estate.

Dan also was active in a number of significant criminal prosecutions and consumer protection actions. His work led to murder and drug trafficking convictions, the dismantling of a nationwide odometer rollback scheme which resulted in one of Hawaii's largest administrative forfeitures, and the creation of Hawaii's first joint environmental crimes task force that united federal, state and local officials in taking on Hawaii's biggest polluters. Dan also has extensive experience in employment law, having represented virtually every state department in arbitration, administrative and legislative proceedings.

Since joining the firm, Dan has focused his practice on representing victims in serious personal injury and wrongful death cases, representing plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of professional liability, commercial, business, real estate, and consumer class action litigations. Among his impressive results, Dan successfully represented a minor in a car-pedestrian accident and obtained the largest settlement paid in 2005 by the State of Hawaii for a tort action.

Dan was raised in Hawaii and graduated from Punahou School in 1980. He attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 1985 with a degree in English Literature. While at Michigan, Dan spent a year studying abroad at the University of Graz, Austria. He received his law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii in 1988 where he was the executive editor of the University of Hawaii Law Review and participated in an exchange program at Oxford University.

When not at work, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, Monica, and son, Kekoa, and is a competitive bodysurfer, triathlete, and basketball player.
